Steubenville Rehearsal Number Two

Our rehearsal was pretty brief on Thursday of this week. We worked on the stage as I really want my actors to get a feel of the space even though it isn't fully set up yet. There were lots of pieces of wood all over the floor, but they made great use of the stage.

We started with some warmups. First they all worked with a partner where one would say (for example) "You are wearing a blue shirt." and the other would respond "I am wearing a blue shirt." They would go back and forth and work on inflection behind what they are saying, which is very important in the piece we are working on. I then had each of them memorize one of their lines and move around the space saying their lines and playing off of the other actors. As a director, I am still trying to get into giving the right directions and saying the right things to get what I want from my actors.

We then read through the script and I had them move around the space and say their lines. They all did a great job working on playing out to all three sides of the audience and making choices, which is very important in the small space that we have. I got a lot of ideas simply just watching them move around and speak and we will begin as a group to make some specific decisions as to the movement of the piece next week. For homework I am having all of them look over the script and send me any ideas that they have about the movement, staging and the script. I think it is very helpful for the whole group to be involved. Overall I think it was extremely productive and I hope that my cast will continue to bring their A game every rehearsal.

Thanks for reading ;)
